The helper `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg` writes a handshake message
and updates the handshake transcript.
With TLS 1.3, we need finer control over the checksum: updating
at message granularity is not sufficient. To allow for manual maintenance
of the checksum in those cases, refine `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg()`
into `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg_ext()` which takes a parameter
determining whether the checksum should be updated.

The AEAD additional data (AAD) is computed differently in TLS 1.3
compared to TLS 1.2, but this change hasn't yet been reflected in
the codee, rendering the current implementation of

This commit fixes this by adjusting the AAD extraction function

of how the AAD has changed from TLS 1.2 to TLS 1.3.

This commit adds the TLS 1.3 specific internal function
```
mbedtls_ssl_tls13_populate_transform()
```
which creates an instance of the SSL transform structure
`mbedtls_ssl_transform` representing a TLS 1.3 record protection
mechanism.
It is analogous to the existing internal helper function
```
ssl_tls12_populate_transform()
which creates transform structures representing record
protection mechanisms in TLS 1.2 and earlier.
Instances of `mbedtls_ssl_session` represent data enabling session resumption.
With the introduction of TLS 1.3, the format of this data changes. We therefore
need TLS-version field as part of `mbedtlsl_ssl_session` which allows distinguish
1.2 and 1.3 sessions.
This commit introduces such a TLS-version field to mbedtls_ssl_session.
The change has a few ramifications:
- Session serialization/deserialization routines need to be adjusted.
This is achieved by adding the TLS-version after the header of
Mbed TLS version+config, and by having the subsequent structure
of the serialized data depend on the value of this field.
The details are described in terms of the RFC 8446 presentation language.
The 1.2 session (de)serialization are moved into static helper functions,
while the top-level session (de)serialization only parses the Mbed TLS
version+config header and the TLS-version field, and dispatches according
to the found version.
This way, it will be easy to add support for TLS 1.3 sessions in the future.
- Tests for session serialization need to be adjusted
- Once we add support for TLS 1.3, with runtime negotiation of 1.2 vs. 1.3,
we will need to have some logic comparing the TLS version of the proposed session
to the negotiated TLS version. For now, however, we only support TLS 1.2,
and no such logic is needed. Instead, we just store the TLS version in the
session structure at the same point when we populate mbedtls_ssl_context.minor_ver.
The change introduces some overlap between `mbedtls_ssl_session.minor_ver` and
`mbedtls_ssl_context.minor_ver`, which should be studied and potentially resolved.
However, with both fields being private and explicitly marked so, this can happen
in a later change.
We were already rejecting them at the end, due to the fact that with the
usual (x, z) formulas they lead to the result (0, 0) so when we want to
normalize at the end, trying to compute the modular inverse of z will
give an error.
If we wanted to support those points, we'd a special case in
ecp_normalize_mxz(). But it's actually permitted by all sources (RFC
7748 say we MAY reject 0 as a result) and recommended by some to reject
those points (either to ensure contributory behaviour, or to protect
against timing attack when the underlying field arithmetic is not
constant-time).
Since our field arithmetic is indeed not constant-time, let's reject
those points before they get mixed with sensitive data (in
ecp_mul_mxz()), in order to avoid exploitable leaks caused by the
special cases they would trigger. (See the "May the Fourth" paper
Without this parameter, it would be hard for callers to know how many bytes
In mbedtls_mpi_read_string, if the string is empty, return an empty bignum
rather than a bignum with one limb with the value 0.
mbedtls_mpi_write_string in base 16 (but not in other bases), as it writes a
bignum with 0 limbs as "" but a bignum with the value 0 and at least one
limb as "00".
This change makes it possible to construct an empty bignum through
mbedtls_mpi_read_string, which is especially useful to construct test
cases (a common use of mbedtls_mpi_read_string, as most formats use in
PSA Crypto always passed MBEDTLS_MD_NONE to Mbed TLS, which worked well
as Mbed TLS does not use this parameter for anything beyond determining
the input lengths.
Some alternative implementations however check the consistency of the
algorithm used for pre-hash and for other uses in verification (verify
operation and mask generation) and fail if they don't match. This makes
all such verifications fail.
For TLS, secp256k1 is deprecated by RFC 8422 §5.1.1. For X.509,
TLS used to prefer larger curves, under the idea that a larger curve has a
higher security strength and is therefore harder to attack. However, brute
force attacks are not a practical concern, so this was not particularly
meaningful. If a curve is considered secure enough to be allowed, then we
might as well use it.
So order curves by resource usage. The exact definition of what this means
is purposefully left open. It may include criteria such as performance and
memory usage. Risk of side channels could be a factor as well, although it
didn't affect the current choice.
The documentation already states that the RNG parameter is mandatory,
since PRs #4488 and #4515. There are several families of functions to
consider here:
- private-key operations (sign, decrypt) all call
mbedtls_rsa_private() where this commit adds a non-NULL check;
- encrypt operations need an RNG for masking/padding and already had a
non-NULL check since #4515 (conditional on \p mode before that)
- verify operations no longer take an RNG parameter since #4515
So, after this commit, all RSA functions that accept an RNG will reach a
non-NULL check before the RNG is used.
This change enables automatic detection and consumption of Mbed TLS
library targets from within other CMake projects. By generating an
`MbedTLSConfig.cmake` file, consuming projects receive a more complete
view of these targets, allowing them to be used as dependencies which
properly inherit the transitive dependencies of the libraries.
This is fairly fragile, as it seems Mbed TLS's libraries do not appear
to properly model their dependencies on other targets, including
third-party dependencies. It is, however, sufficient for building and
linking the compiled Mbed TLS libraries when there are no third-party
dependencies involved. Further work is needed for more complex
use-cases, but this will likely meet the needs of most projects.
Calling mbedtls_mpi_cmp_int reveals the number of leading zero limbs
to an adversary who is capable of very fine-grained timing
measurements. This is very little information, but could be practical
with secp521r1 (1/512 chance of the leading limb being 0) if the
adversary can measure the precise timing of a large number of
signature operations.
This commit removes the API
```
mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites_for_version()
```
which allows to configure lists of acceptable ciphersuites
for each supported version of SSL/TLS: SSL3, TLS 1.{0,1,2}.
With Mbed TLS 3.0, support for SSL3, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1
is dropped. Moreover, upcoming TLS 1.3 support has a different
notion of cipher suite and will require a different API.
This means that it's only for TLS 1.2 that we require
a ciphersuite configuration API, and
```
mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites()
```
can be used for that. The version-specific ciphersuite
configuration API `mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites_for_version()`,
in turn, is no longer needed.
In real life, min << N and the probability that mbedtls_mpi_random()
fails to find a suitable value after 30 iterations is less than one in
a billion. But at least for testing purposes, it's useful to not
outright reject "silly" small values of N, and for such values, 30
iterations is not enough to have a good probability of success.
Pick 250 iterations, which is enough for cases like (min=3, N=4), but
not for cases like (min=255, N=256).
mbedtls_mpi_random() uses mbedtls_mpi_cmp_mpi_ct(), which requires its
two arguments to have the same storage size. This was not the case
when the upper bound passed to mbedtls_mpi_random() had leading zero
limbs.
Fix this by forcing the result MPI to the desired size. Since this is
not what mbedtls_mpi_fill_random() does, don't call it from
mbedtls_mpi_random(), but instead call a new auxiliary function.
Add tests to cover this and other conditions with varying sizes for
the two arguments.
Rename mbedtls_ecp_gen_privkey_sw to mbedtls_mpi_random since it has
no particular connection to elliptic curves beyond the fact that its
operation is defined by the deterministic ECDSA specification. This is
a generic function that generates a random MPI between 1 inclusive and
N exclusive.
Slightly generalize the function to accept a different lower bound,
which adds a negligible amount of complexity.
mbedtls_ecp_gen_privkey_mx generates a random number with a certain
top bit set. Depending on the size, it would either generate a number
with that top bit being random, then forcibly set the top bit to
1 (when high_bit is not a multiple of 8); or generate a number with
that top bit being 0, then set the top bit to 1 (when high_bit is a
multiple of 8). Change it to always generate the top bit randomly
first.
This doesn't make any difference in practice: the probability
distribution is the same either way, and no supported or plausible
curve has a size of the form 8n+1 anyway. But it slightly simplifies
reasoning about the behavior of this function.
Don't calculate the bit-size of the initially generated random number.
This is not necessary to reach the desired distribution of private
keys, and creates a (tiny) side channel opportunity.
The library rejected an RNG input of all-bits-zero, which led to the
key 2^{254} (for Curve25519) having a 31/32 chance of being generated
compared to other keys. This had no practical impact because the
probability of non-compliance was 2^{-256}, but needlessly
complicated the code.
This commit makes the API
- mbedtls_ssl_get_output_max_frag_len()
- mbedtls_ssl_get_input_max_frag_len()
- mbedtls_ssl_get__max_frag_len()
for querying the state of the Maximum Fragment Length
extension internal.
Rationale: The value those APIs provide to the user is in
upper bounds for the size of incoming and outgoing records,
which can be used to size application data buffers apporpriately
before passing them to mbedtls_ssl_{read,write}(). However,
there are other factors which influence such upper bounds,
such as the MTU or other extensions (specifically, the
record_size_limit extension which is still to be implemented)
which should be taken into account.
There should be more general APIs for querying the maximum
size of incoming and outgoing records.
For the maximum size of outgoing records, we already have such,
namely mbedtls_ssl_get_max_out_record_payload().
For the maximum size of incoming records, a new API will be
added in a subsequent commit.
On space-constrained platforms, it is a useful configuration to be able
to import/export and perform RSA key pair operations, but to exclude RSA
key generation, potentially saving flash space. It is not possible to
express this with the PSA_WANT_ configuration system at the present
time. However, in previous versions of Mbed TLS (v2.24.0 and earlier) it
was possible to configure a software PSA implementation which was
capable of making RSA signatures but not capable of generating RSA keys.
To do this, one unset MBEDTLS_GENPRIME.
Since the addition of MBEDTLS_PSA_BUILTIN_KEY_TYPE_RSA_KEY_PAIR, this
expressivity was lost. Expressing that you wanted to work with RSA key
pairs forced you to include the ability to generate key pairs as well.
Change psa_crypto_rsa.c to only call mbedtls_rsa_gen_key() if
MBEDTLS_GENPRIME is also set. This restores the configuration behavior
present in Mbed TLS v2.24.0 and earlier versions.
It left as a future exercise to add the ability to PSA to be able to
express a desire for a software or accelerator configuration that
includes RSA key pair operations, like signature, but excludes key pair
generation.
Without this change, linker errors will occur when attempts to call,
which doesn't exist when MBEDTLS_GENPRIME is unset.
mbedtls_ssl_{get,set}_session() exhibited idempotent behaviour
in Mbed TLS 2.x. Multiple calls to those functions are not useful
in TLS 1.2, and the idempotent nature is unsuitable for support of
TLS 1.3 which introduces the availabilty to offer multiple tickets
for resumption, as well as receive multiple tickets.
In preparation for TLS 1.3 support, this commit relaxes the semantics
of `mbedtls_ssl_{get,set}_session()` by allowing implementations to
fail gracefully, and leveraging this freedom by modifying the
existing TLS 1.2 implementation to only accept one call to
`mbedtls_ssl_{get,set}_session()` per context, and non-fatally
failing all subsequent invocations.
For TLS 1.3, it will be leveraged by making multiple calls to
`mbedtls_ssl_get_session()` issue one ticket a time until no more
tickets are available, and by using multiple calls to
`mbedtls_ssl_set_session()` to allow the client to offer multiple
tickets to the server.
calling the driver, so the driver doesn't have to do this once more.
The PSA core will also not start an operation with a requested length
which is larger than the full MAC output size, so the output length check
in the driver isn't needed as long as the driver returns an error on
mac_setup if it doesn't support the underlying hash algorithm.
It makes sense to do the length checking in the core rather than expect
each driver to deal with it themselves. This puts the onus on the core to
dictate which algorithm/key combinations are valid before calling a driver.
Additionally, this commit also updates the psa_mac_sign_finish function
to better deal with output buffer sanitation, as per the review comments
on #4247.
As psa_mac_sign_finish / psa_mac_verify_finish already checks that the
operation structure is valid (id is non-zero), the driver itself doesn't
have to check for that anymore. If the operation has a driver ID assigned,
it means that driver has returned success from its setup function, so the
algorithm value will be set correctly.
Signed-off-by: Steven Cooreman <steven.cooreman@silabs.com>
The key passed to the driver has been imported by the PSA Core, meaning
its length has already been verified, and the driver can rely on the
buffer length and key attributes being consistent.
The purpose of key_set was to guard the operation structure from being
used for update/finish before a key was set. Now that the implementation
fully adheres to the PSA API, that function is covered by the `alg`
variable instead. It's set to the algorithm in use when a key is set, and
is zero when the operation is reset/invalid.
Since HMAC moved into its own compilation unit, the internal API needed
to be documented and finalized. This means no more reaching deep into
the operation structure from within the PSA Crypto core. This will make
future refactoring work easier, since internal HMAC is now opaque to the
This is a temporary measure. Other operations in the PSA Core which rely
on this internal HMAC API should be rewritten to use the MAC API instead,
since they can then leverage accelerated HMAC should a platform provide
such acceleration support.
Zephyr's native posix port define _POSIX_C_SOURCE with a higher value
breaks the build.
Handling the receipt of a handshake record after the initial handshake
requires non-trivial logic depending on the protocol version and the
endpoint. This logic is currently embedded in mbedtls_ssl_read().
With the introduction of support for [D]TLS 1.3, the logic will become
even more complex, since [D]TLS 1.3 drops support for renegotiation --
which in [D]TLS 1.2 is the main purpose of post-handshake handshake
messages -- but instead introduces numerous other post-handshake
handshake messages.
In order to pave the way for those changes, this commit improves
readability and maintainability of mbedtls_ssl_read() by moving
the TLS <=1.2 logic for handling post-handshake handshake messages
into a separate helper function ssl_handle_hs_message_post_handshake().
The logic of the code is entirely unchanged.
The server-side `Certificate` handshake message writer checks
whether a certificate is present, and if not fails with:
```
MBEDTLS_ERR_SSL_CERTIFICATE_REQUIRED
```
This should never happen, since the library checks the presence
of a suitable certificate before picking a ciphersuite. It is
therefore more suitable to convert this check into an assertion,
and fail with MBEDTLS_ERR_SSL_INTERNAL_ERROR upon failure.
The error code MBEDTLS_ERR_SSL_INVALID_VERIFY_HASH is only
returned from the internal function
```
mbedtls_ssl_set_calc_verify_md()
```
Moreover, at every call-site of this function, it is only
checked whether the return value is 0 or not, while the
exact return value is irrelevant.
The behavior the library is therefore unchanged if we return 1
instead of MBEDTLS_ERR_SSL_INVALID_VERIFY_HASH in
`mbedtls_ssl_set_calc_verify_md()`. This commit makes this change.
The new compile-time option MBEDTLS_X509_REMOVE_INFO removes various
X.509 debugging strings and functionality, including
```
mbedtls_x509_crt_verify_info()
```
which ssl_client2.c and ssl_server2.c use to print human readable
descriptions of X.509 verification failure conditions. Those
conditions are also grepped for in numerous ssl-opt.sh tests.
Instead of disabling those tests if MBEDTLS_X509_REMOVE_INFO is set,
this commit essentially moves mbedtls_x509_crt_verify_info() to
ssl_client2.c and ssl_server2.c. However, instead of just copy-pasting
the code from x509_crt.c, the following approach is used:
A macro MBEDTLS_X509_CRT_ERROR_INFO_LIST is introduced which for each
verification failure condition invokes a user-defined macro X509_CRT_ERROR_INFO
with (a) the numerical error code, (b) the string presentation of the
corresponding error macro, (c) the info string for the error condition.
This macro can thus be used to generate code which somehow iterates over
the verifiation failure conditions, but the list of error conditions and
information strings is nowhere duplicated.
This is then used to re-implement mbedtls_x509_crt_verify_info() in
x509_crt.c and to provide a functionally equivalent (yet slightly different)
version in ssl_client2.c and ssl_server2.c in case MBEDTLS_X509_REMOVE_INFO
is set.
This way, little changes to ssl-opt.sh will be necessary in case
MBEDTLS_X509_REMOVE_INFO is set because the info strings for the
verification failure conditions will be printed regardless of whether
MBEDTLS_X509_REMOVE_INFO is set or not.
Session-ID based session resumption requires that the resumed session
is consistent with the client's ClientHello in terms of choice of
ciphersuite and choice of compression.
This check was previously assumed to be performed in the session cache
implementation, which seems wrong: The session cache should be an id-based
lookup only, and protocol specific checks should be left to Mbed TLS.
the SSL session cache has been queried
- removes the ciphersuite and compression consistency check from
