Having an automatically generated header file makes it harder to have

Running `generate_ssl_debug_helpers.py` generates both
`ssl_debug_helpers_generated.c` and `ssl_debug_helpers_generated.h`.
List the `.h` file as well as the `.c` file in `check-generated-files.sh` so
that `check-generated-files.sh -u` will complain if it isn't up to date.
List it in `Makefile` and `CMakeLists.txt` so that parallel builds know when
to wait until the `.h` file is present. In `Makefile`, declare the `.c` file
as depending on the `.h` file for order. This way, a dependency for either
will wait until the `.h` file is present, and since the `.h` file is
generated after the `.c` file, this guarantees that the `.c` file is
present.
This fixes random failures of `make -j` from a fresh checkout.

Zeroize local MAC variables used for CBC+HMAC cipher suites. In encryption,
this is just good hygiene but probably not needed for security since the
data protected by the MAC that could leak is about to be transmitted anyway.
In DTLS decryption, this could be a security issue since an adversary could
learn the MAC of data that they were trying to inject. At least with
encrypt-then-MAC, the adversary could then easily inject a datagram with
a corrected packet. TLS would still be safe since the receiver would close
the connection after the bad MAC.

mbedtls_pk_parse_key() makes a temporary copy of the key when it calls
pk_parse_key_pkcs8_encrypted_der(), because that function requires a
writable buffer. pk_parse_key_pkcs8_encrypted_der() always rejects an
empty password, so skip calling it in that case, which allows us to
skip the allocation as well.

Reorder fields mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params in order to save code on Arm
Thumb builds. The general idea is to put often-used fields in the direct
access window of 128 elements from the beginning of the structure.
The reordering is a human selection based on a report of field offset and
use counts, and informed by measuring the code size with various
arrangements. Some notes:
* This is the same reordering as the corresponding commit in #5189 for 2.2x.
* I moved most byte-sized fields at the beginning where they're sure to be
in the direct access window.
* I moved buffering earlier because it can be around the threshold depending
on the configuration, and it's accessed in a lot of places.
* I moved several fields, including update_checksum and friends, early so
that they're guaranteed to be in the early access window.

Replace bitfields mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params by bytes. This saves some
code size, and since the bitfields weren't group, this doesn't increase the
RAM usage.
Replace several ints that only store values in the range 0..255 by uint8_t.
This can increase or decrease the code size depending on the architecture
and on how the field is used. I chose changes that save code size on Arm
Thumb builds and will save more after field reordering.
Leave the bitfields in struct mbedtls_ssl_hs_buffer alone: replacing them by

The current definition of PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN includes
PSA_ALG_RSA_PKCS1V15_SIGN_RAW and PSA_ALG_ECDSA_ANY, which don't strictly
follow the hash-and-sign paradigm: the algorithm does not encode a hash
algorithm that is applied prior to the signature step. The definition in
fact encompasses what can be used with psa_sign_hash/psa_verify_hash, so
it's the correct definition for PSA_ALG_IS_SIGN_HASH. Therefore this commit
moves definition of PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN to PSA_ALG_IS_SIGN_HASH, and
replace the definition of PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN by a correct one (based
on PSA_ALG_IS_SIGN_HASH, excluding the algorithms where the pre-signature
step isn't to apply the hash encoded in the algorithm).
In the definition of PSA_ALG_SIGN_GET_HASH, keep the condition for a nonzero
output to be PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN.
Everywhere else in the code base (definition of PSA_ALG_IS_SIGN_MESSAGE, and
every use of PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN outside of crypto_values.h), we meant
PSA_ALG_IS_SIGN_HASH where we wrote PSA_ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN, so do a
global replacement.
```
git grep -l IS_HASH_AND_SIGN ':!include/psa/crypto_values.h' | xargs perl -i -pe 's/ALG_IS_HASH_AND_SIGN/ALG_IS_SIGN_HASH/g'
The makefile build specifies -L. -lmbedx509 -lmbedcrypto flags first,
and only then object files referencing symbols from those libraries.
In this order the linker will not add the linked libraries to the
DT_NEEDED section because they are not referenced yet (at least that
happens for me on ubuntu 20.04 with the default gnu compiler tools).
By first specifying the object files and then the linked libraries, we
do end up with libmbedx509 and libmbedcrypto in the DT_NEEDED sections.
This way running dlopen(...) on libmedtls.so just works.
Note that the CMake build does this by default.
mbedtls_ssl_conf_groups allows supported groups for key
sharing to be configured via their IANA NamedGroup ID.
This is added in anticipation of PQC and Hybrid key
sharing algorithms being integrated into Mbed TLS.
mbedtls_ssl_conf_curves is deprecated in favor of
mbedtls_ssl_conf_groups. handshake_init has been
modified to translate and copy curves configured
via conf_curves into a heap allocatied array of
NamedGroup IDs. This allows the refactoring of code
interacting with conf_curve related variables (such
as curve_list) to use NamedGroup IDs while retaining
the deprecated API.
Base64 decoding uses equality comparison tests for characters that don't
leak information about the content of the data other than its length, such
as whitespace. Do this with '=' as well, since it only reveals information
about the length. This way the table lookup can focus on character validity
and decoding value.
files using scripts etc. When the option is Off, CMake will assume the
files are available from the source tree; in that mode, it won't require
any extra tools (Perl for example) compared to when we committed the
files to git.
The intention is that users will never need to adjust this option:
- in the development branch (and features branches etc.) the option is
always On (development mode);
- in released tarballs, which include the generated files, we'll switch
the option to Off (release mode) in the same commit that re-adds the
* In library code: on failure, goto exit and return ret.
* In pkey programs: goto exit.
The helper `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg` writes a handshake message
and updates the handshake transcript.
With TLS 1.3, we need finer control over the checksum: updating
at message granularity is not sufficient. To allow for manual maintenance
of the checksum in those cases, refine `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg()`
into `mbedtls_ssl_write_handshake_msg_ext()` which takes a parameter
determining whether the checksum should be updated.
This commit adds the TLS 1.3 specific internal function
```
mbedtls_ssl_tls13_populate_transform()

`mbedtls_ssl_transform` representing a TLS 1.3 record protection
mechanism.
It is analogous to the existing internal helper function

Instances of `mbedtls_ssl_session` represent data enabling session resumption.
With the introduction of TLS 1.3, the format of this data changes. We therefore
need TLS-version field as part of `mbedtlsl_ssl_session` which allows distinguish
1.2 and 1.3 sessions.
This commit introduces such a TLS-version field to mbedtls_ssl_session.
The change has a few ramifications:
- Session serialization/deserialization routines need to be adjusted.
This is achieved by adding the TLS-version after the header of
Mbed TLS version+config, and by having the subsequent structure
of the serialized data depend on the value of this field.
The details are described in terms of the RFC 8446 presentation language.
The 1.2 session (de)serialization are moved into static helper functions,
while the top-level session (de)serialization only parses the Mbed TLS
version+config header and the TLS-version field, and dispatches according
to the found version.
This way, it will be easy to add support for TLS 1.3 sessions in the future.
- Tests for session serialization need to be adjusted
- Once we add support for TLS 1.3, with runtime negotiation of 1.2 vs. 1.3,
we will need to have some logic comparing the TLS version of the proposed session
to the negotiated TLS version. For now, however, we only support TLS 1.2,
and no such logic is needed. Instead, we just store the TLS version in the
session structure at the same point when we populate mbedtls_ssl_context.minor_ver.
The change introduces some overlap between `mbedtls_ssl_session.minor_ver` and
`mbedtls_ssl_context.minor_ver`, which should be studied and potentially resolved.
However, with both fields being private and explicitly marked so, this can happen
in a later change.

We were already rejecting them at the end, due to the fact that with the
usual (x, z) formulas they lead to the result (0, 0) so when we want to
normalize at the end, trying to compute the modular inverse of z will
give an error.
If we wanted to support those points, we'd a special case in
ecp_normalize_mxz(). But it's actually permitted by all sources (RFC
7748 say we MAY reject 0 as a result) and recommended by some to reject
those points (either to ensure contributory behaviour, or to protect
against timing attack when the underlying field arithmetic is not
constant-time).
Since our field arithmetic is indeed not constant-time, let's reject
those points before they get mixed with sensitive data (in
ecp_mul_mxz()), in order to avoid exploitable leaks caused by the
special cases they would trigger. (See the "May the Fourth" paper

Without this parameter, it would be hard for callers to know how many bytes
of output the function wrote into the output buffer. It would be possible,
since the cumulated output must have the same length as the cumulated input,
but it would be cumbersome for the caller to keep track.

In mbedtls_mpi_read_string, if the string is empty, return an empty bignum
rather than a bignum with one limb with the value 0.
Both representations are correct, so this is not, in principle, a
user-visible change. The change does leak however through
mbedtls_mpi_write_string in base 16 (but not in other bases), as it writes a
bignum with 0 limbs as "" but a bignum with the value 0 and at least one
limb as "00".
This change makes it possible to construct an empty bignum through
mbedtls_mpi_read_string, which is especially useful to construct test
cases (a common use of mbedtls_mpi_read_string, as most formats use in
production encode numbers in binary, to be read with mbedtls_mpi_read_binary

PSA Crypto always passed MBEDTLS_MD_NONE to Mbed TLS, which worked well
as Mbed TLS does not use this parameter for anything beyond determining
the input lengths.
Some alternative implementations however check the consistency of the
algorithm used for pre-hash and for other uses in verification (verify
operation and mask generation) and fail if they don't match. This makes
all such verifications fail.

TLS used to prefer larger curves, under the idea that a larger curve has a
higher security strength and is therefore harder to attack. However, brute
force attacks are not a practical concern, so this was not particularly
meaningful. If a curve is considered secure enough to be allowed, then we
might as well use it.
So order curves by resource usage. The exact definition of what this means
is purposefully left open. It may include criteria such as performance and
memory usage. Risk of side channels could be a factor as well, although it

This is necessary for the case where the public part of an EC keypair
needs to be computed from the private part - either because it was not
included (it's an optional component) or because it was compressed (a
format we can't parse).
This changes the API of two public functions: mbedtls_pk_parse_key() and
mbedtls_pk_parse_keyfile().
Tests and programs have been adapted. Some programs use a non-secure RNG
(from the test library) just to get things to compile and run; in a
future commit this should be improved in order to demonstrate best
practice.

It was indirectly calling ecp_mul() without an RNG. That's actually the
rare case where this should be allowed, as ecp_muladd() is typically
used on non-secret data (to verify signatures or ZKPs) and documented as
not being constant-time.
Refactor a bit in order to keep the ability to call ecp_mul() without a
RNG, but not exposed publicly (except though muladd).

Fix trivial faulty calls in ECP test suite and ECP/ECJPAKE self-tests (by
adding a dummy RNG).
Several tests suites are not passing yet, as a couple of library
function do call ecp_mul() with a NULL RNG. The complexity of the fixes
range from "simple refactoring" to "requires API changes", so these will
be addressed in separate commits.
This makes the option MBEDTLS_ECP_NO_INTERNAL_RNG, as well as the whole
"internal RNG" code, obsolete. This will be addressed in a future
commit, after getting the test suites to pass again.

(This commit is best reviewed using `git show -b` as indentation levels
have changed.)
The documentation already states that the RNG parameter is mandatory,
since PRs #4488 and #4515. There are several families of functions to
consider here:
- private-key operations (sign, decrypt) all call
mbedtls_rsa_private() where this commit adds a non-NULL check;
- encrypt operations need an RNG for masking/padding and already had a
non-NULL check since #4515 (conditional on \p mode before that)
- verify operations no longer take an RNG parameter since #4515
So, after this commit, all RSA functions that accept an RNG will reach a
non-NULL check before the RNG is used.

mbedtls_dhm_get_value can be seen as either a copy function or a getter
function. Given the name and the semantics, it's more of a getter, even if
it "gets" by doing a copy. Therefore, put the context first, and the
selector next, leaving the output for last.

library/ecp_alt.h (declaring individual functions of the ECP module that can

This change enables automatic detection and consumption of Mbed TLS
library targets from within other CMake projects. By generating an
`MbedTLSConfig.cmake` file, consuming projects receive a more complete
view of these targets, allowing them to be used as dependencies which
properly inherit the transitive dependencies of the libraries.
This is fairly fragile, as it seems Mbed TLS's libraries do not appear
to properly model their dependencies on other targets, including
third-party dependencies. It is, however, sufficient for building and
linking the compiled Mbed TLS libraries when there are no third-party
dependencies involved. Further work is needed for more complex
use-cases, but this will likely meet the needs of most projects.

to an adversary who is capable of very fine-grained timing

adversary can measure the precise timing of a large number of

This commit removes the API
```
mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites_for_version()
```
which allows to configure lists of acceptable ciphersuites
for each supported version of SSL/TLS: SSL3, TLS 1.{0,1,2}.
With Mbed TLS 3.0, support for SSL3, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1
is dropped. Moreover, upcoming TLS 1.3 support has a different
notion of cipher suite and will require a different API.
This means that it's only for TLS 1.2 that we require
a ciphersuite configuration API, and
```
mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites()
```
can be used for that. The version-specific ciphersuite
configuration API `mbedtls_ssl_conf_ciphersuites_for_version()`,
in turn, is no longer needed.

In real life, min << N and the probability that mbedtls_mpi_random()
fails to find a suitable value after 30 iterations is less than one in
a billion. But at least for testing purposes, it's useful to not
outright reject "silly" small values of N, and for such values, 30
iterations is not enough to have a good probability of success.
Pick 250 iterations, which is enough for cases like (min=3, N=4), but
not for cases like (min=255, N=256).

mbedtls_mpi_random() uses mbedtls_mpi_cmp_mpi_ct(), which requires its
two arguments to have the same storage size. This was not the case
when the upper bound passed to mbedtls_mpi_random() had leading zero
limbs.
Fix this by forcing the result MPI to the desired size. Since this is
not what mbedtls_mpi_fill_random() does, don't call it from
mbedtls_mpi_random(), but instead call a new auxiliary function.
Add tests to cover this and other conditions with varying sizes for
the two arguments.

P-1 is as bad as 1 as a blinding value. Don't accept it.
The chance that P-1 would be randomly generated is infinitesimal, so
this is not a practical issue, but it makes the code cleaner. It was

Rename mbedtls_ecp_gen_privkey_sw to mbedtls_mpi_random since it has
no particular connection to elliptic curves beyond the fact that its
operation is defined by the deterministic ECDSA specification. This is
a generic function that generates a random MPI between 1 inclusive and
N exclusive.
Slightly generalize the function to accept a different lower bound,
which adds a negligible amount of complexity.

mbedtls_ecp_gen_privkey_mx generates a random number with a certain
top bit set. Depending on the size, it would either generate a number
with that top bit being random, then forcibly set the top bit to
1 (when high_bit is not a multiple of 8); or generate a number with
that top bit being 0, then set the top bit to 1 (when high_bit is a
multiple of 8). Change it to always generate the top bit randomly
first.
This doesn't make any difference in practice: the probability
distribution is the same either way, and no supported or plausible
curve has a size of the form 8n+1 anyway. But it slightly simplifies
reasoning about the behavior of this function.

Don't calculate the bit-size of the initially generated random number.
This is not necessary to reach the desired distribution of private
keys, and creates a (tiny) side channel opportunity.
This changes the way the result is derived from the random number, but
does not affect the resulting distribution.

The library rejected an RNG input of all-bits-zero, which led to the
key 2^{254} (for Curve25519) having a 31/32 chance of being generated
compared to other keys. This had no practical impact because the
probability of non-compliance was 2^{-256}, but needlessly
complicated the code.
The exception was added in 98e28a74e3 to
avoid the case where b - 1 wraps because b is 0. Instead, change the
comparison code to avoid calculating b - 1.

performed arithmetic on the null pointer before detecting that the output

UBSan with Clang 10 flagged it. So fix it (fix#4025).

This commit makes the API
- mbedtls_ssl_get_output_max_frag_len()
- mbedtls_ssl_get_input_max_frag_len()
- mbedtls_ssl_get__max_frag_len()
for querying the state of the Maximum Fragment Length
extension internal.
Rationale: The value those APIs provide to the user is in
upper bounds for the size of incoming and outgoing records,
which can be used to size application data buffers apporpriately
before passing them to mbedtls_ssl_{read,write}(). However,
there are other factors which influence such upper bounds,
such as the MTU or other extensions (specifically, the
record_size_limit extension which is still to be implemented)
which should be taken into account.
There should be more general APIs for querying the maximum
size of incoming and outgoing records.
For the maximum size of outgoing records, we already have such,
namely mbedtls_ssl_get_max_out_record_payload().
For the maximum size of incoming records, a new API will be
added in a subsequent commit.
